” The child- she can’t stand it long in there” – who is referred to here? why was she in danger? How was she saved?

Ans : ” The child- she can’t stand it long in there” this line has been taken from the famous story ‘Jimmy Valentine’ written written by William Sydney Porter. Here Agatha, the younger daughter of Annabel’s elder sister is referred to as ‘the child’.

The elmore bank had purchased a new safe and vault so Mr Adams was very proud of it. He wanted everyone to inspect it. For this purpose the family of Adams along with Jimmy alias Ralph D Spencer went to visit the new vault in the Elmore Bank. While the adults were busy in their talks, May, the elder sister of Agatha trapped her younger sister inside the vault. The girl was in danger because the vault could not be unlocked by Mr Adams. There was also not enough air inside.

In this very critical situation Annabel asked Ralph to do something. Ralph could not deny the request of his beloved. Though he knew his action would reveal his real identity, he took his instruments and broke the lock of the vault. Thus Jimmy saved the little girl Agatha.
