(Long Questions and Answers)

1. How does Sidda give company to Leela?

Ans-                The story Leela’s Friend gives us a chance to witness an intimate intimacy between Sidda and Leela. Mr. Sivasanker, the father of five years old Leela, engages Sidda for their household works. Sidda’s main task is to look after Leela. This is why he plays with her, tells her stories and does other things as Leela wishes. He shows Leela the beauty and magic of the moon. He tells her that she can see moon wherever she wants to see.

Leela also begins to prefer Sidda. She tries to teach SIdda with catalogues, books and pencils though she only knows two or three letters and can vaguely draw cat or crow. She never parts with Sidda. Even when she goes to bed Sidda tells her stories of animals, gods, magicians, etc sitting on the floor near her bed. All these made Leela supremely happy.

2. Now write – who said this to whom? How did Leela try to teach Sidda?

Ans-               In the story Leela’s Friend written by R.K . Narayan , the little character Leela daid this to Sidda, the domestic servant in her house.
Through the story the readers have an opportunity to witness the activities of Leela to teach Sidda. Her childlike activities please the readers.  At dusk Leela used to hold a class for him. Sidda would squat on the floor with a pencil between his fingers and a catalogue in front of him. She then used to command him to write and he had to try to copy whatever she wrote. When Sidda failed to copy her writings and drawings, Leela would rebuke him and double her efforts to educate him. Though Sidda was adept in controlling the moon, was utterly unable to play pencil. Leela used to keep him there pinned to his seat till his stiff inflexible wrist cracked. He was least interested to learn, so avoided the matter by saying that her mother was calling her to dinner. Thus Leela tried to teach Sidda.

4. Describe the character of Sidda.

Ans-          In the story “Leela’s Friend” the great writer R K Narayan has presented Sidda as the representative of lower class people. He has also depicted Sidda’s character with enough vividness. In the story we witness that Sidda was very responsible servant in the house of Mr. Shivasanker. He had to perform various household duties like – washing, tending garden, chopping woods, etc. Through the passing of time he became a reliable and constant company of Leela. He performed all his duties faithfully. He took proper care of Leela. He had a great power to control the moon as he convinced little Leela. He had no interest in study and never learnt anything that Leela tried to teach him. He also had no idea how to proof his innocence when he was accused of stealing the chain of Leela. He remained speechless and became a victim because he belonged to a lower class whose voice is never heard.

5.  “Sidda vanished into the night -” narrate what happened after Sidda vanished into the night?

Ans =         After the arrival of Sidda and Leela from the market, Leela’s mother noticed that Leela’s gold chain was missing. She at once suspected Sidda. Then Sidda became frightened and ran away from the house into the night. An hour later Mr Shivasanker came home and came to know the matter. Immediately he lodged a complaint against Sidda at the police station. That separation was intolerable to Leela. She felt uneasy to go to bed without Sidda’s story. Her mother tried to make her sleep in vain. She even thought that Sidda might come at night to loot.
Somedays later a police inspector and a constable brought Sidda in Mr. Shivasanker’s house. Leela was very much pleased to see her old friend. But she was forbidden to meet him for being a thief. Everyone asked him about his theft. He confirmed his innocence but unfortunately he was taken to the prison. After Somedays the chain was discovered from a tamarind pot but Sidda was not engaged again in Mr. Shivasanker’s house.

6. Who discovered the chain and from where? What did Leela’s mother do after that? How did Leela’s father react?

Ans=          In the story ” Leela’s Friend”, Leela’s lost gold chain was discovered by her mother.  When she put her hand into the tamarind pot, she came to notice the chain. She took it to the tap and washed off the coating of tamarind on it. Then her mom asked Leela if she had put it there. Leela replied that perhaps she put but she did not know the exact time.
When Leela’s father was informed about the chain he also said that Leela had put it mistakenly in the tamarind pot.
In response to her wife’s question about Sidda’s present situation she said that he would inform the inspector the next day. And he denied to engage Sidda again for his household works.
