The Honesty of a Woodcutter

Once upon a time a woodcutter lived in a village. He was very poor. One day he went to cut wood by the river. When he was cutting woods, all of a sudden his axe slipped from his hand and fell into the river. The Woodcutter became very sad and started weeping. He lamented, “Oh! God what shall I do now? The axe was my last source of earning money. It is now in water. Please help me.” Hearing his lamentation the river God appeared in front of him and said, “I can return back your axe”. Then he sank into the river and brought a golden axe. To examine his honesty he asked, “Is it yours?” The fair and square wood cutter replied, ” No, it is not mine”. Then the river God appeared with a silver axe but the woodcutter refused it simply. Now the river God thought for a moment. He brought him his own iron axe and asked, “Is it yours, my son?” The woodcutter’s face was delighted and he said emotionally, “Yes, it is my own axe. Thank you so much.” Then the God said “I am very satisfied to see you. You are really an honest person. So I will give you the golden and silver axes. The woodcutter became very glad and thanked the God again.
